So it's been forever since I've posted on here and what I'm about to write is not a normal post for me by any means, but I am passionate about it.
Greensboro is working to increase the minimum wage to $9.36/hour. This amount equals the purchasing power of the minimum wage in 1968. In the richest country in the world people who work should not live in poverty. Santa Fe, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and Albuquerque have already raised their citywide minimum wage. But in my opinion that won't work here. We are not a big city like San Francisco or Washington. I'm afraid that if we raise minimum wage that much that we hourly workers will pay in other regards. For one thing I worry about the slashing of benefits, cutting out health care can easily balance things out. I'm worried that stores will be understaffed and employees will be overworked in order to make up for the difference in pay. I worry that new businesses and old will move outside of city limits and workers will move with them. This is not good for Greensboro.
Although it would be nice to have a little extra jingle in my pocket, I feel like this hike in hourly wage is not worth it for the city of Greensboro and its hard workers. This is an idea that is great in theory, but I am not sure about the execution or its results.
Do any of you have any opinions? Thoughts?

carly: what do you want to find on monday morning? claire: a typewriter. carly: why? what do you need a typewriter for. claire: because i can do my homework from home. carly: can't you just use a computer? it types. claire: typewriters just let you type, i don't want to go on computers because it takes more time to print. typewriters...um...you just have to type letters.
this is claire's (a five year old) response when i asked her what she wanted for christmas. i thought that typerwriters were obsolete, why does my little sister know what they are?

if there was a fight between my house now and my old house of a week ago...my new house would so own!
seriously though, i'm in a much better place where i am. to be honest it hasn't been that much more relaxing here, (moving, unpacking and the general chaos that comes around this time every year)but at least i have the security of peace and quiet. it's crazy how one can adapt to such a lousy lifestyle, i felt so unhealthy and unmotivated towards the end. and although i'm not particuarly fond of most people in the house, i don't hate anyone and i don't wish them any bad luck. in fact, i hope they are as happy as i am.
today was sale day at acme, all i ended up getting was a fifty cent sandman reissue. but i did score a juice shop smoothie out of it. tonight (about ten minutes ago) i saw the seussical with stephen and his family, it was somewhere between urinetown and batboy. well, i suppose i should go and enjoy the last few remaining hours of the day. tomorrow is going to be pretty long and tiresome (i have to finish a five page paper and make a book that i have no means of finishing).
peace.

Standing there alone the ship is waiting all systems are go are you sure?
control is not convinced but the computer has the evidence "no need to abort"
the countdown starts watching in a trance the crew is certain
nothing left to chance all is working trying to relax up in the capsule "send me up a drink" jokes Major Tom the count goes on
4 3 2 1 Earth below us drifting falling floating weightless calling calling home...
second stage is cut we're now in orbit stabilizers up running perfect starting to collect requested data what will it effect when all is done thinks Major Tom
back at ground control there is a problem go to rockets full not responding "hello Major Tom are you receiving turn the thrusters on we're standing by" there's no reply
4 3 2 1 Earth below us drifting falling floating weightless calling calling home...
across the stratosphere a final message "give my wife my love" then nothing more
far beneath the ship the world is mourning they don't realize he's alive no one understands but Major Tom sees now the life commands this is my home I'm coming home
Earth below us drifting falling floating weightless coming home... Earth below us drifting falling floating weightless coming home... Earth below us drifting falling floating weightless coming coming home... home.....

| the summer (so far) in a thousand words |
[Wednesday
July 19th, 2006 3:39pm] |
the puppy is growing up and i love her more everyday.

i need to clean out my closet.

strangers with candy and nip/tuck on dvd are better drugs than crack.

the house is full of roommates and thankfully no longer full of drama.

so many friends have moved away, but this summer i've made new ones and revisited old ones.
vacation comes in one week. rock.

| substance, substance...what is that again? |
[Saturday

i'm typing on a new keyboard, the clicks of the keys make me excited. it has lots of buttons that open up neat windows (oh! so many) and a guard for my wrists so they don't collapse when i get old.
i already feel old.
it's gorgeous outside so i went on a walk with stephen (just like we've done nearly every day this past week). we tried to find ben's house, even had a housewarming gift, but to no avail. stephen says it doesn't exist. maybe it exists in hammerspace. probably no one will get that reference, but it made me happy inside to throw that out there.
i've wanted to draw/paint all day today, but my room is so crammed with stuff (ready to move to a bigger room) that i don't have the peace of mind to spread out and create.
i finished my second website, i'm terribly proud of it. i worked 30+ hours on it since monday and i think it is evident in the final product. i'm hoping that this summer i can work on my own personal site (without class requirements!) and some logo work for my dad's company. i feel so design oriented, like a runner who has trained for months in order to run an insane marathon.
now if only i can find the time/concentration (which is so hard to get a hold of) and make it happen.
i went the apo ball last night, ted needed a bill (and i wanted to give a little something back to brittany before she left for good). i'm really not into theater, i can't believe that i ever thought i might be able to. loud, crazy--they all somehow managed to sing along and over each other all at the same time. and what's worse is that no one bothered to say hello, in fact, mostly i went ignored.
i think i'll try to set some summer plans into action tonight.

there aren't many things in life that give you the goosebumps with just a glance. so when it happens it feels almost magical. today i went to a lecture in the weatherspoon for a new drawing teacher that's applying to uncg. i had to leave early as did another girl i know from drawing class. as we were walking by the main first floor gallery she pointed a finger into the room and asked me if i'd seen the display. i was flabberghasted. on the wall were some of the best artistic works (that weren't "artsy") that i've seen in a long time. vivid colours, a mix of traditional and modern i wanted every one of them. please, do yourself a favour and go see the show, it's worth the fifteen minute walk.
